Females of Western Gorillas-Eastern Gorillas are sexually mature at the age of 7-9 years, but they first mate at the age of 10 years. Males are usually mature at 10 years, but they mate when they are 15-20 years.
Western Gorillas Eastern Gorillas - Gestation Period and Mating
Gestation period lasts 251-295 days. Actually there is no information as for a particular breeding season of Gorillas. After a gestation period, females give birth to one young (twins may also occur although it is seldom). During her life, a female usually gives birth to two or three young. Females are ready to mate every 3.5 - 4.5 years. The mother weans the young at an age of 2.5 -3 years.
Western Gorillas Eastern Gorillas - Mortality
Average probability of surviving per year from age of first reproduction to longevity is 0.91 for a gorilla. Mortality in stable populations is about 42% for immature, mostly in the first year of life and 5% for adults.
Western Gorillas Eastern Gorillas - Density
There are about 1.26 - 3.7 individuals of Eastern Gorillas per square km; Western Gorillas differs from territory, thus there are 2.5 nesting individuals per square km and overall density is of 1.7 individuals per square km.
Western Gorillas Eastern Gorillas - Home range
Home ranges vary from 5 - 35 sq km (2 - 14 sq mi). Those of Western Lowland Gorillas are generally larger, primarily because of differences in diet. Some studies have shown that there are seasonal differences in range, based primarily on food availability and dietary preferences of Western Gorilla-Eastern Gorilla species.
Western Gorillas Eastern Gorillas - Social Organization
Usually Gorillas live in groups of 2 to as many as 38 individuals. Actually Western Gorillas populations have smaller groups than Eastern gorillas with about 5 members in a group. Gorillas do not defend their territories; their territory usually overlaps with the territories of other groups.
There is a strong hierarchy inside each group. There is usually only one male that is a leader and is the only one that can breed. The hierarchy among males is based on size that is why the biggest male will usually be a leader and the dominant male. The groups are usually very stable; the dominant male usually retains leadership for years within the group of Western Gorillas-Eastern Gorillas.
